The VAW Tracker is a data-driven initiative to monitor and visualize violence against women (VAW) across Bangladesh. By combining real-time data from news reports with foundational statistics from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), this platform offers a comprehensive view of the scale, trends, and evolving patterns of violence faced by women and girls in the country.
Each data point on this website represents more than a statistic—it tells a story of injustice, resilience, and the urgent need for action. Updated daily, our tracker provides users with:
The incident data is sourced from verified reports published in both national and regional Bangladeshi news outlets. Each entry includes detailed attributes such as:
This level of detail enables journalists, researchers, activists, and policymakers to explore the geographic, demographic, and temporal dimensions of VAW in Bangladesh.
In addition to media-sourced data, the platform integrates findings from the nationally representative 2015 Violence Against Women Survey conducted by BBS. This survey provides essential baseline data on physical, sexual, psychological, and economic violence, as well as on reporting behaviors and help-seeking among survivors. Including this dataset enriches the tracker's context, enabling deeper insights into both reported and unreported violence.
Four organisations—Dataful, UTSA, Sangbad, and Suprobhat Bangladesh—have jointly developed the VAW Tracker with support from Free Press Unlimited and Article 19.
By transforming fragmented reports into a structured, searchable hub, the VAW Tracker aims to raise awareness, inform interventions, and support advocacy efforts to end violence against women in Bangladesh. Whether you're a journalist looking for data to support a story, a policymaker assessing trends, or an activist pushing for reform—this tool is here to empower your work.
